Mammoths Open NCAA Tournament With 6-1 Win Over Lesley

AMHERST, Mass. -- A pair of goals from Patience Kum led the offense for the Amherst College women's soccer team in a 6-1 win over Lesley University in the NCAA Division III Tournament round of 64 on Saturday at Hitchcock Field.

The Mammoths (15-1-2), ranked second in the NCAA Region I Rankings and 12th in the nation in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III poll, are now unbeaten in 14 straight games dating back to September. The NECC champion Lynx (14-4-1) hadn't lost since September either and saw an eight-game winning streak snapped in the tournament opener. Amherst advances to face Johns Hopkins in the round of 32 on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Hitchcock Field. The Blue Jays are ranked third in the NCAA Region V Rankings but second in the nation in the United Soccer Coaches poll, which was conducted before Hopkins lost its only match of the season in the Centennial Conference semifinals.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • First Team All-NESCAC selection Ruby Hastie got the scoring started quickly, bending in a shot that deflected off the crossbar into the goal in the fifth minute. It was the 12th goal of the season for Hastie and the fifth straight game in which the senior striker has scored.
  • Three minutes later, Hastie dropped a pass back to Sierra Rosado, who chipped a shot into the back of the net for the fourth goal of her rookie campaign.
  • Kum scored her first of the game in the 19th minute off a corner kick from senior Sophia Fikke to make the Amherst lead 3-0.
  • Lesley got on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute off a free kick brilliantly placed by senior Kayleigh Chicas, glancing off the crossbar for her second goal of the season.
  • The Amherst offense didn't let up in the second half. Senior Natalie Landau sent a long pass forward that found first-year Carter Hollingsworth in the box, who netted her second goal of the season to make the score 4-1.
  • The Mammoths were awarded a penalty kick in the 72nd minute that Kum converted for her NESCAC-leading 14th goal of the season and third goal in the last two games.
  • Amherst made it 6-1 when junior Isabel Stern sent a crossing pass into the box that classmate Sarah Sullivan put away for her second goal this season.
