No. 9 Field Hockey Shuts Out Bates, 1-0

AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore Muffie Mazambani netted the game-winner for the Mammoths as the ninth-ranked Amherst College field hockey team edged Bates College, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Hill Field.

With the win, Amherst improves to 9-2 on the season and to 5-2 in league play, while Bates falls to 4-7 overall (1-6 NESCAC). Amherst returns to the field next Saturday, October 16 when they travel to fourth-ranked Tufts University for a 12:00pm conference matchup.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Capitalizing on the Mammoths' first penalty corner of the contest, Mazambani netted her eighth goal of the fall to give Amherst a 1-0 lead. Dishing the insertion pass to Beth Williamson '23 at the top of the arc, Mazambani sprinted to the front of the net and tipped Williamson's blast past the Bates netminder.
  • Bates looked to switch up momentum and even the score in the 24th and 25th minute, earning four penalty corner opportunities in the two-minute span, but sophomore Sara Nidus was unfazed in goal, turning away two low rips by the Bobcats to keep the visitors off the board.
  • Aiming to double their advantage midway through the third frame, Mazambani and Sam Maynard '25 combined to put three quick shots on target but the Bates' keeper thwarted the attempts.
  • Anna Lindeis had a solid chance for the Bobcats with 6:00 on the clock in the third, powering a shot through traffic from the right side, but first-year Kate Smith continued her stellar defensive play for the Mammoths in her rookie campaign, registering her third defensive save of the season on the attempt.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Bates owned the advantage in shots on target (8-5) and penalty corners (10-4).
  • Tabbed with the start in goal, Nidus (2-0) registered seven stops for Amherst in the winning effort, while Grace Biddle (4-7) made four saves in the loss for the Bobcats.
