Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 13 Mammoths Play Wesleyan to 2-2 Double Overtime Draw

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Seniors Gabe Gitler and German Giammattei each found the back of the net for the Mammoths, but a late score by the home team sealed the tie as the No. 13 Amherst College men's soccer team fought Little III rival Wesleyan University to a 2-2 double overtime draw Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field.

"The reality is you can't give up two goals on the road in a NESCAC game against a good team and expect to win the game. Wesleyan is a talented, confident team and that's a place (Jackson Field) that we always have a tough time," said head coach Justin Serpone. "I thought we played pretty well in the second half and created a bunch of really good chances. It's hard to critique our effort. We just need to get some of our details right."

With the draw, Amherst moves to 8-1-01 on the season and to 4-1-1 in league play, while Wesleyan moves to 5-2-2 overall (2-2-2 NESCAC). Amherst returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, October 10 when they welcome Bates College to Hitchcock Field for a 3:00PM battle.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Taking the lead in the 14th minute, Chris Porte gave the home team a 1-0 edge as he capitalized on a corner kick from the right side and headed shot into the nylon. Evan O'Brien was credited with the assist on the score.
  • Responding 40 seconds into the second half, Gitler notched his first goal of the fall to draw the sides into a 1-1 deadlock. Dodging four Cardinals defenders on the right side, Ada Okorogheye '24 powered a cross to Gitler who ran onto the pass just inside the top of the box and drove a laser into the upper corner of the net.
  • Taking their first lead of the day at the 72:30 mark, the Mammoths used a free kick from 40 yards out on the right side to set the score at 2-1. Sending a controlled kick inside the box, Alex Shahmirzadi '23 connected with Okorogheye who lofted a pass to the far left post. Ignacio Cubeddu '23 was first to the ball, sending a shot off a defender and towards Giammattei who sent a right-footed volley past the Wesleyan netminder.
  • Netting the equalizer with 9:52 remaining in regulation to force overtime, a well executive give-and-go inside the box between Lucas Ruehlemann and Dane Harmaty set Ruehlemann up for the score from point blank range.
BY THE NUMBERS
  • Amherst owned the advantage in shots (21-8), shots on target (11-5), and corner kicks (7-2)
  • Tabbed with the start in net, Kofi Hope-Gund '22 (2-0-1) registered three saves in the tie for the Mammoths, while Liam Devanny (5-2-2) made nine stops for Wesleyan.

"We have Bates tomorrow so we need to have a short memory," noted Serpone. "Bates is talented, tough and committed. Should be another battle."
