AMHERST, Mass. – The Mammoths extended their unbeaten streak to nine games behind scores from
Ignacio Cubeddu '23 and
German Giammattei '22 as the No. 12 Amherst College men's soccer team shut out Bates College, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Hitchcock Field.
With the win, Amherst improves to 9-1-1 on the season and to 6-1-1 in league play, while Bates falls to 6-5-0 overall (3-4-0 NESCAC). The Mammoths return to action next Saturday, October 16 when they travel to third-ranked Tufts University for a 3:00PM battle at Bello Field in a rematch of the 2019 National Championship Final.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- Netting his second goal of the fall and what stood as the game-winner, Cubeddu found the back of the net at the 27:29 mark with an assist from Alex Shahmirzadi '23. Collecting the ball 20 yards from frame, Cubeddu cut to the right, split a pair of defenders and ripped a right-footed shot into the nearside top corner.
- Potting an insurance dagger for the Mammoths in the 80th minute, Giammattei teamed up with Cubeddu and Jonny Novak '24 to push the score to 2-0. Running onto the ball in the box, Giammattei chipped a shot past the Bobcats keeper who came off the line in an attempt to cut down the angle. Giammattei's team-leading six goals so far this season currently ranks second in the NESCAC.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Amherst owned the advantage in shots (17-9) and shots on target (8-3), while the Bobcats held the edge in corner kicks (5-2).
- Senior Kofi Hope-Gund (3-0-1) registered three saves for the Mammoths in the winning effort in goal, while Bruce David (2-3-0) made six stops for Bates in the loss.
