ORLANDO, Fla. – #14 Case Western Reserve University swept the doubles matches and opened up a 4-0 lead on #6 Amherst College, eventually defeating the Mammoths 7-2 on Friday morning at USTA National Campus.

Jayson Fung '20 picked up the first point of the day for Amherst with a three-set victory at third singles, outlasting Aaron Umen 6-2, 3-6, 11-9. Zach Bessette '19 topped Sam Concannon 7-6, 6-2 at fourth singles to pull Amherst back to a 4-2 deficit, and the Mammoths had a glimmer of hope at securing the five points from singles matches.

The Spartans clinched the match, however, when Matthew Chen came from an 8-3 tiebreaker deficit against Amherst #1 singles Sean Wei '21. Chen won the super-tiebreak 11-9 to cap a two-set comeback after Wei had taken the opening set 6-4.

Harris Foulkes '22 also won his opening set at #6 singles, but Chai Aduru took the second set 7-5 and then won in a tiebreak himself.

Jon Powell won twice for the Spartans, pairing with Anthony Kanam for an 8-7 (8-6) win over Fung and Bessette at first doubles, then winning 6-0, 6-2 over Amherst first year Damien Ruparel in the first singles match to finish.

Amherst will look to finish off their Florida trip, which has seen them go 5-2, with another victory tomorrow morning when they face Colorado College at 9:00 AM.

CWRU improves to 11-5 and is already underway in their second match of the day against Dickinson.
