SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Mammoths earned wins on four of the six singles courts as the Amherst College men's tennis team defeated Bryant University, 5-2 Sunday afternoon at the Bryant Tennis Complex.
Playing in accordance with Div. I guidelines, today's match was in a 7-point format, with each singles match counting as 1 point and the totality of doubles play counting as 1 point for the team that earned wins on two of the three courts.
With the victory, Amherst improves to 13-3 on the season, while Bryant falls to 8-12 overall. Amherst returns to action on Friday, April 14 when they travel to Connecticut College and MIT.
DOUBLES ACTION
- The Mammoths earned wins on the second and third courts in doubles competition to take a 1-0 edge heading into singles play.
- The tandem of Andrew Arnaboldi '17 and Chris Paradis '20 bested Jorge Ortiz-Garcia and Josh Kliger, 8-5 in a hard fought matchup on the second court, while Sam Silver '17 and Jon Heidenberg '19 clinched the doubles point with a 8-2 win over Joe Sterrey and Corey DiPaola, 8-3.
SINGLES PLAY
- Claiming victories in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth positions in singles action, Amherst logged the 5-2 win over Bryant.
- In the No. 2 spot, Zach Bessette '19 downed Oliver Welsh, 6-1, 6-3, while Jesse Levitin '19 edged Andrew Quiros in three-sets, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (2) on the second court.
- Facing off in the fifth position, Paradis defeated Ortiz-Garcia, 6-4, 6-3, while Arnaboldi beat John Templeman 7-5, 6-3 to close out the day.
