No. 13 Amherst Suffers Hard Fought Loss to No. 3 Bowdoin, 5-4

AMHERST, Mass. – Holding a 2-1 advantage entering singles action, the Polar Bears captured wins on four of the six courts as the No. 14 Amherst College men's tennis team was edged by third-ranked Bowdoin College, 5-4 Saturday afternoon at the newly renovated Amherst Tennis Courts.

With the loss Amherst falls to 12-3 on the season and to 1-1 in NESCAC play, while Bowdoin improves to 10-1 overall (2-0 NESCAC). Amherst returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, April 9 when they travel to Division I Bryant University for a 2 p.m. non-conference tilt. 

DOUBLES ACTION

  • The Mammoths concluded doubles competition holding a 2-1 edge, as the home team grinded out wins on the first and second courts.
  • In the top spot, doubles duo Zach Bessette '19 and Jayson Fung '20 battled to a hard fought 9-8(3) victory against Luke Tercek and Grant Urken, while Oscar Burney '20 and Josh Marchalik '20 rallied past Kyle Wolfe and Jerry Jiang, 8-6.

SINGLES PLAY

  •  Marchalik finished 2-0 on the day after notching a win on the second court for Amherst, defeating Urken in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
  • The Mammoths final victory on the day came in the fourth position, with Fung besting Jiang, 6-0, 7-6 (7).
