Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- For the fifth time in seven games this month, the Amherst College men's soccer team has needed extra time, but on Wednesday evening it only took one minute and fifty seconds for Kyle Kelly '21 to score the golden goal that delivered a 2-1 victory over Mt. St. Mary in a non-conference game.
Kelly scored from inside of the box off of a corner kick from Fikayo Ajayi '19 to help the Mammoths improve to 8-2-2 on the season.
Amherst will return to NESCAC play on Saturday when they host Wesleyan at 2:30 pm at Hitchcock Field, and will honor their four seniors prior to kick off.
The Mammoths had an 11-4 edge in shots but it took until the 52nd minute before either team could find the back of the net. On a scramble in the box off of another corner, where Amherst had a 9-2 advantage, Wilmer Hlinomaz '18 gave the Purple a lead with his fourth goal of the season.
Gabe Gitler '21 earned the assist, the second point of his rookie campaign.
First year Michael Stone made three saves in net for the Mammoths, while Jakup Myrtja and Thomas Trainor split time in net for the Knights, making three saves on five shots.
Mt. St. Mary equalized less than nine minutes after Hlinomaz's strike when Joey Dolan curled in a free kick for his 14th goal of the season.
