No. 10 Amherst Falls to Middlelebury, 1-0

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The No. 10 Amherst College women's soccer team outshot Middlebury in the second half 7-5, but the Purple & White couldn't find the back of the net as they suffered their second loss of the season, 1-0.

With the loss, Amherst falls to 2-2-0 on the season and 1-1-0 in conference play, while Middlebury improves to 3-1-0 overall and 1-1-0 in NESCAC action. Amherst returns to action at home when they take on non-conference foe Wentworth Institute of Technology, tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m.

Despite several scoring opportunities by both teams, neither side was able to register a goal for the duration of the first half. Amherst's best chance of the opening half came at the 5:32 mark as senior Emily Masten sent a shot on target that was turned away by Panther goalkeeper Ursala Alwang, while Middlebury nearly took a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute as Adrianna Gildner ripped a shot from 25 yards out off the crossbar.

Amherst earned a pair of opportunities in the 60th minute as Hannah Guzzi '18 found some space while streaking down the left sideline, however her shot was denied by Alwang. First-year Sloan Askins collected the rebound in the goalie box with an apparent open net, however Middlebury defender Amanda Haik was there to make the clutch defensive save. 

Middlebury would tally the game-winner at the 64:31 mark as the Panthers took advantage of a corner kick with Emma Shumway one-touching a pass from Gildner into the netting. 

GAME NOTES

  • Amherst goalkeeper Chelsea Cutler '19 (2-2-0) recorded two saves in the loss in net. 
  • The Panthers edged Amherst in shots and corner kicks, 10-8 and 7-3, but Amherst held a 7-5 edge in shots in the second half. 
  • With neither team scoring in the first half, Amherst came out strong in the second half when Delancey King '18 took a shot just wide of the net.
