Coletti Leads Mammoths to 4-2 Road Win at WPI

WORCESTER, MA. — Caroline Coletti scored twice as the Mammoths bounced back from its season-opening defeat with a 4-2 road victory over WPI on Tuesday night at H. Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.

After Connecticut College erased a two-goal halftime deficit to hand Amherst a 4-3 loss in Saturday's opener, the Mammoths responded with an explosive attacking performance in Worcester. Amherst scored three times in the first half, then answered WPI's second-half push with a late  goal to secure its first win of the season.

With the victory, the Mammoths move to 1-1-0 on the season, while WPI falls to 1-3-0. Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 12, hosting Bowdoin College at Hitchcock Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Amherst struck early, taking a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. Emma Darling set up Coletti, who found the back of the net at the 5:39 mark for her first goal of the season.
  • WPI drew level in the ninth minute. Maeve Steckley provided the assist on Aliza Margolis' first tally of the campaign, evening the score at 1-1.
  • The Mammoths regained the lead in the 18th minute. Katie Pedersen found Coletti, who scored her second goal of the night and second of the season to put Amherst back in front, 2-1.
  • Amherst added an important third goal shortly before halftime. Allison Hayes recorded the assist as Mandy Sutton netted her first goal of the season at the 39:12 mark, sending the Mammoths into the break with a 3-1 advantage.
  • WPI cut into the deficit midway through the second half, as Abigail Johnson assisted Sarah Frye's first goal of the season in the 64th minute to bring the Engineers within one at 3-2.
  • The Mammoths answered late to put the game away. Millie McLeod delivered the assist to Darling, who scored her first goal of the season in the 83rd minute to restore Amherst's two-goal lead and seal the 4-2 final.
BY THE NUMBERS:
  • Coletti led Amherst with two goals, contributing to two of the Mammoths' four goals.
  • Darling finished with a goal and an assist, while Pedersen, Hayes and McLeod each added an assist.
