Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. – No. 8 Amherst College used two goals each from Rachel Passarelli '16 and Julia Crerend '18, but the Purple & White's second half rally was not enough as No. 7 Trinity College held on for an 11-7 victory in Wednesday evening's NESCAC tilt at Sheppard Field in Hartford, Conn.
Amherst concludes its regular season with an overall record of 11-3 and advances to its 16th NESCAC Championship Tournament which begins Saturday, April 30. Trinity also advances to the NESCAC playoffs with an overall record of 13-2.
FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS
- Trinity got off to a fast start, netting the game's first five goals in a stretch of just over 11 minutes.
- Allie Barrett scored an unassisted goal at the 22:42 mark to begin the Bantams' run, before Emma Malicki capitalized with a goal on a free position shot. Barret added her second of the game at the 15:08 mark, before Abby McQuillan and Abby McInerney each found the back of the net to make it 5-0.
- Amherst broke through with 8:07 remaining in the opening stanza when Crerend ripped a free position shot past the goalie on the man-advantage to make it 5-1. Claire Cagnassola '17 then scored a free position goal of her own with 2:41 on the clock to set the halftime score at 5-2 in favor of Trinity.
SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS
- The Purple & White continued to rally as Passarelli scored a free position goal early in the second frame (27:49), before Mary Grace Cronin '18 pulled Amherst to within one with an unassisted score at the 26:34 mark to make it 5-4.
- Martha Griffin answered with a free position strike less than a minute later, but Crerend responded with another goal for the Purple & White to make 6-5 with 21:25 remaining in the second half. Cronin provided the helper on Crerend's second tally of the contest.
- The Bantams began to pull away at the 17:46 mark when Barrett fired in a goal on a feed from Nicole Stauffer to ignite a run of five straight goals.
- Griffin added back-to-back scores including one on the free position attempt, while McInerney added two of her own with one coming by way of free position and the other assisted by Griffin to make it 11-5 with 7:48 left in the contest.
- At the 4:48 mark and playing with a man-advantage, Mia Haughton '16 scored an unassisted goal, before Passarelli found the back of the net for the second time on a free position shot to pull the Purple & White to within four at 11-7 with 2:41 on the clock.
- That's as close as Amherst could get as both of Kate Wyeth's '17 attempts were denied, once by the post, and once by goalie Emily Mooney, as Trinity held on for the victory.
BY THE NUMBERS
- Christy Forrest '16 made seven saves, and picked up two ground balls in the losing effort, while Passarelli added three draw controls.
- Katie Paolano '16 added two ground balls and two caused turnovers, while Passarelli also forced a pair of miscues.
- Ashley Stewart led all players with four ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Zoe Ferguson earned the win in 30 minutes between the posts and needed to make just one save. Mooney added two stops in reserve for the Bantams to help seal the win.
