Haughton's Overtime Goal Lifts No. 8 Amherst Over Williams, 10-9

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Amherst College received three goals from Mia Haughton '16, including the game-winner in overtime, as the eighth-ranked Purple & White edged NESCAC and Little III rival Williams College, 10-9 in Saturday afternoon's thriller at Farley-Lamb Field in Williamstown, Mass.

With the win, Amherst improves to 11-2 on the season, 7-2 in NESCAC play, while Williams moves to 4-9 overall, 2-7 in conference play.

Amherst, which is currently riding a six-game unbeaten streak, has now won seven straight against Williams, and has clinched the last six Little III titles dating back to the 2010 season.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • In a back-and-forth start that set the tone for the game, Amherst forged ahead when Rachel Passarelli '16 and Hanna Krueger '17 scored back-to-back goals separated by just 28 seconds, to give the Purple & White a 2-0 lead at the 26:14 mark.
  • Williams answered with three straight goals as Natalie Gill and Katie Gallop scored on assists from Jenna Chodos and Anne Rehfuss respectively to knot the game at 2-2 with 17:17 to play in the opening stanza.
  • A Chodos strike on a free position attempt gave the Ephs a 3-2 edge with 8:59 on the clock, but Julia Crerend '18 responded with a goal just 51 ticks later to even the game at 3-3.
  • From there, neither team was able to net another goal in the half as both Christy Forrest '16 and Margaret Draper finished with three saves each to keep the game at 3-3 after 30 minutes of play.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • Amherst struck just 15 seconds into the second frame when Haughton scored unassisted, followed by Crerend who scored her second with help from Krueger at the 24:30 mark to make it 5-3.
  • Williams pulled one back at the 23:27 mark through Emma Tenbarge, but Haughton responded with her second of the half to make it 6-4 at the 21:12 mark.
  • The Ephs used another Gallop score with 17:40 remaining in regulation to pull the Ephs back to within one, but consecutive goals by Passarelli and Claire Cagnassola '17 (free position shot on the man-advantage), allowed the Purple & White to stake an 8-5 cushion with 13:45 left to play in the game.
  • Williams answered with a run of four straight markers in a span of 10:38 as Rehfuss, Tenbarge, Alyssa Maddalone, and Micaela Dussel each provided a goal to help the Ephs surge ahead, 9-8 with 21 seconds to play. Dussel and Rehfuss notched assists on the first two goals of the rally, while Maddalone's score came by way of a free position attempt.
  • With just four seconds on the clock, Kelly Karczewski '18 received a perfect feed from Cagnassola and drove in the game-tying goal to force extra time.

OVERTIME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Early in the overtime, Tenbarge had a chance to give Williams the win, but a clutch save on the free position shot by Forrest kept the game squared at 9-9.
  • With just 1:10 left in the first frame of extra time, Haughton found the back of the net for third time in the contest to give the Purple & White a thrilling and hard-fought victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Passarelli finished with four ground ballsand a pair of caused turnovers, while Cagnassola and Crerend notched four and three draw controls respectively.
  • Forrest made seven saves to earn the win between the pipes, while Draper finished with eight stops in the loss for Williams.

  • Amherst concludes its 2016 regular season Wednesday, April 27 when it travels to Hartford, Conn. to take on Trinity College at 7 p.m.
  • Williams travels to Western New England University Sunday, April 24 for a 2 p.m. non-league contest.
