A Pair of Singer Goals Lift No. 7 Men's Soccer to a 2-1 (2OT) Win at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – Greg Singer '16 netted a pair of goals, including what stood as the game-winner with just 29 seconds remaining in double overtime, to help lift the seventh-ranked Amherst College men's soccer team to a thrilling, 2-1 victory over NESCAC and Little III rival Williams College Saturday afternoon at Cole Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • A scoreless first half saw Amherst apply the majority of pressure early in the contest, as the Purple & White outshot Williams, 9-4 in the first 45 minutes, and hold a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal.
  • Williams goalkeeper Christian Alcorn finished the first half with three saves, while Amherst's net-minder Thomas Bull '16 turned away the lone shot on goal that he faced in the first half.
  • The Ephs took the lead in the 50th minute of play when Sean Dory found the back of the net to give the hosts a 1-0 edge.
  • Amherst had a pair of opportunities in the 67th minute when Milton Rico '16 delivered a pair of corner kicks into the box. Greg Singer '16 got on the end of the second service and ripped a shot on target but Alcorn was there to make the save.
  • In the 78th minute, the Purple & White struck for the equalizer as Singer was able to slot in his first goal of the season, following a pass across the six-yard box from Christopher Martin '17 and force overtime.
  • With neither team able to find the go-ahead goal in the first 10 minutes of overtime, Williams had an opportunity midway through the second stanza of extra time when Kevin Mercadante sent a shot on frame, but Bull was there to make a critical save.
  • With just 29 seconds on the clock, Singer notched his second goal of the game following assists by Nico Pascual-Leone '16 and Justin Aoyama '17, to lift the Purple & White to a thrilling victory.
  • Singer finished with four shots on goal, and six total in the game to lead Amherst, while Martin placed two of his five attempts on frame as the Purple & White outshot Williams, 21-13, and held an 8-5 edge in shots on goal.
  • Bull finished with four saves in the winning effort, while Alcorn made six stops in the loss for the Ephs.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Saturday's contest marked the 100th meeting between the NESCAC and Little III rivals dating back to 1922.
  • The all-time series now stands at 45-40-15 in favor of Amherst.
  • The Purple & White has allowed just one goal in six games to start the 2015 season.
