AMHERST, Mass. – The top-ranked Amherst College men's tennis team was edged by Azusa Pacific, 5-4 and earned a 6-3 win over Cerritos to earn a split on Friday afternoon.
With the split, Amherst moves to 7-3 on the season, while Azusa Pacific improves to 11-3 overall and Cerritos moves to 15-4 overall.
Azusa Pacific 5, Amherst 4
Azusa Pacific, ranked second in NCAA Division II, held a 2-1 lead after doubles as Amherst juniors Aaron Revzin and Michael Solimano defeated Jan Meyer and Gary Yam from the No. 1 court, 8-6 to give the Jeffs their lone doubles win.
In singles action, Solimano defeated Pascal Engel, 6-3, 6-2 from the No. 3 court and Revzin beat Yam, 6-3, 6-4 from the No. 4 court. In the sixth position Sean Rodriguez '15 battled back to defeat Tomas Aranguiz, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 to secure the Purple & White's fourth win in the contest but it was not enough as Azusa Pacific held on for the 5-4 win.
Amherst 6, Cerritos 3
Against Cerritos, Amherst swept all six singles courts. Andrew Arnaboldi '17 defeated Amadi Kagoma on the No. 1 court, 6-2, 6-4; Ben Fife '16 bested Augustin Lombardi, 7-6, 8-4 on court 2; Myles Tang '17 posted scores of 6-0 and 6-2 to defeat Mark Antoniuk on the No. 3 court; while Sam Silver '17 defeated Henry Ayesiga, 6-4, 6-5 on the No. 4 court.
On the No. 5 court, Carlos de Bracamonte '16 downed Mathieu David, 6-0, 6-3, and Ben Birkenfeld '18 secured a 6-3, 6-0 win over Milos Zoric from the No. 6 position.
Cerritos received all three of its points in doubles.
Amherst returns to split squad action on Saturday, March 21 at Glendale Community College at 4 p.m. and San Diego Mesa at 5 p.m.
