AMHERST, Mass. – The top-ranked Amherst College men's tennis team split its pair of matches Wednesday in California by defeating No. 40 Chapman, 9-0 and falling to Vanguard, 8-1.
The Jeffs are now 5-2 on the season and return to the court tomorrow. They will divide the team once again to play Hope International University and No. 27 Skidmore College at 4 p.m. ET.
MATCH 1: VANGUARD 8, AMHERST 1
The Jeffs picked up one point in doubles play against the Lions, who improved to a perfect 15-0 on the season. Andrew Yaraghi '16 and Jon Cypers '15 picked up a win in No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-3. Sam Silver '17 gave the Purple & White its best chance of a singles point after tying the match with a 7-5 win in set two, but fell short in the decisive third frame, 10-5.
MATCH 2: AMHERST 9, CHAPMAN 0
Amherst cruised to a 9-0 sweep over the Panthers, dropping them to 5-4 on the year. In doubles play, the No. 1 and No. 3 teams swept their opponents, 8-0. Michael Solimano '16 and Aaron Revzin '16 played in the top position, while Anton Zykov '17 and Andrew Arnaboldi '17 played in the No. 3 spot. Russell Einbinder '16 and Sean Rodriguez '15 picked up an 8-5 win in No. 2 doubles.
The Purple & White swept singles play as well with wins in the top of the lineup by Zykov (6-7, 7-5), Solimano (6-1, 6-4) and Revzin (6-2, 6-2) from the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions, respectively. In the bottom of the order, Arnaboldi claimed No. 4 singles (7-6, 6-3), Einbinder took No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-4) and Rodriguez earned a win in No. 6 singles (6-2, 6-0).
