Jeffs Fall to Trinity College in Double Overtime Heartbreaker, 1-0

AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College junior goalkeeper Holly Burwick made three saves, but a goal by Elisa Dolan win the 104th minute broke a scoreless tie as Trinity College notched a hard-fought, 1-0 double overtime victory over the Jeffs in Tuesday evening's NESCAC women's soccer game at Gooding Field.

With the loss, Amherst concludes its regular season 11-4-0 overall, 7-3-0 in NESCAC action. The Jeffs will host a NESCAC Quarterfinal contest on Saturday, Nov. 1. With the win, Trinity caps its regular season campaign 8-6-1 overall, 4-5-1 in league play, and will also compete in the NESCAC Quarterfinals.

In a fiercely contested game, that saw neither team register a goal through 103 minutes of action, the Bantams finally netted the game-winner when Dolan controlled the ball on a corner kick by Kendra Lena and slotted it into the top right corner to give Trinity a 1-0 victory.

Amherst outshot the Bantams, 16-13 in the game, and held an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks. Trinity net-minder Monica DiFiori made seven saves in the shutout win.

With 15 minutes to play in the opening period, Rachael Abernethy '16 nudged a quick pass from the right wing to Hannah Guzzi '18 who found open space down the middle of the pitch. Guzzi carried the ball into the box but Sheena Landy was able to recover and prevent a shot attempt. The Jeffs had another attempt to breakthrough when Emily Hester '17 fired a shot from 25 yards out that curled over the bar wide right in the 43rd minute of action.

Karyn Barrett had both of Trinity's first half shots but one veered off target, and Burwick corralled the other to keep the game scoreless through 45 minutes.

Amherst threatened again early in the second stanza when Delancey King '18 ripped a shot that crept just over the bar in the 50th minute, before Guzzi blasted a shot towards goal but DiFiori was there to collect the ball a minute later.

The Bantams answered with a pair of shots when Alexa Menard headed a cross towards goal that narrowly went outside the post at the 53:38 mark. She then fired a shot wide of target in the 54th minute.

With just over 30 minutes to play in regulation, Quinn Phillips '17 lofted a ball into the box which Megan Kim '16 hit on the volley, but her attempt sailed wide.

At the 18:45 mark, Phillips sent Guzzi in with a well-placed through ball. Guzzi juked the keeper but could not get enough on the try as DiFiori was able to scramble back and keep the ball out of the net. Meredith Manley '18 then ripped a shot on target but DiFiori fended off the effort.

With just under 13 minutes to play, Guzzi footed a shot that glanced off the crossbar and DiFiori was able to clear the danger.

The Bantams rallied with pressure of its own when Maggie Crowe headed a corner kick from Barrett, and Laura Nee followed that with a shot that faded right of the goal.

After 90 scoreless minutes of action, the Jeffs had the first opportunity to break the deadlock when Manley lifted a corner into the box. The Ball eventually fell to the feet of Emily Masten '17 who launched a shot on net, but DiFiori was there to make her seventh stop of the contest.

With three minutes to play in overtime, Dolan drilled the ball towards goal, but Burwick was equal to the shot, keeping the game knotted at 0-0.
