PITTSBURGH, Pa. - For the second consecutive day, the Amherst College men's tennis team wins by a score of 5-4 as the Jeffs defeated Carnegie Mellon University on Sunday afternoon.
The Purple & White open the season 2-0 in dual-matches, while handing the Tartans (3-1) their first loss of the season.
Amherst picked up one win in doubles action from the No. 3 spot. Andrew Yaraghi '16 and Andrew Arnaboldi '17 claimed the first win of the match with a decisive 8-2 victory over Kiril Kirkov and Kunal Wadwani. However, the Tartans took wins from both the No. 1 and No. 2 positions to head into singles play with a 2-1 match lead.
In singles action, Michael Solimano '16 picked up a win from the No. 1 spot when he defeated Carnegie Mellon's top player, Abhishek Alla, 6-3, 6-3. Arnaboldi then put the Jeffs ahead by one as he cruised to victory in the No. 6 spot. The sophomore defeated Edward Ang by scores of 6-1, 6-2.
At the top of the lineup, Yaraghi added another Jeff win to put the Purple & White ahead in the match, 4-2. Playing in the No. 3 position, he swept Kirkov (6-0) in the first set before narrowly edging his opponent in set two, 7-6.
The Tartans claimed wins in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots but Aaron Revzin '16 clinched the match with a come-from-behind win from the No. 2 position. Revzin dropped the first set against Will Duncan (7-6), but claimed sets two and three by scores of 6-2 and 6-1, respectively.
