AMHERST, Mass. – The 17th-ranked Amherst women's squash team split a pair of matches against Wesleyan and Williams at the Little Three Championships to move to 5-7 on the season.
Opening the day with a 7-2 victory over the Cardinals, the Jeffs closed out the afternoon with an 8-1 loss to No. 14 Williams. Amherst will return to action on Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at the NESCAC Championships hosted by Hamilton.
Wesleyan's Mary Foster '14 picked up one of two wins for the Cardinals against the Jeffs, defeating Ericka Robertson '16 at the top of the order, 3-0 (11-9, 12-10, 11-6). Arielle Lehman outlasted Lauren Nelson '15 in the second slot, 3-2 (10-12, 12-10, 11-4, 9-11, 11-7), while Annie Maxwell '15 swept Meyha Sud '16, 3-0 (11-4, 11-7, 11-7).
After dropping the first set of her fourth position match-up with Liza Bayless '16, 11-9, Tiana Palmer-Poroner '17 took each of the next three frames by scores of 11-9, 11-7 and 11-9, respectively. Knotted at a set apiece in a fifth position match against Nell Schwed '14, Evelyn Kramer '14 wrapped up the victory with a pair of 11-5 and 11-8 wins.
Taking the first two against Claire Miller '15, 11-7 and 12-10, Khushy Aggarwal '16 blanked her Cardinal counterpart 11-0. Taryn Clary '16 defeated Miranda Linsky '14, 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 12-10), while Corri Johnson '16 needed just three sets to power past Abigail Smith '17. Lena Rice '14 held her own at the bottom of the lineup, downing Hannah Plon '14, 3-0 (11-8, 11-7, 11-8).
With Williams' Alyssa Northrop '14 upending Robertson, 3-0 (11-9, 11-6, 11-5), in the afternoon's first position match-up, Lehman fell short against Ellie O'Neill '15 in five sets. Caroline Sawin '15 and Nichole Feshbach '16 turned away Sud and Palmer-Poroner in straight sets, while Ellen Coombe '17 dispatched of Kramer, 3-1 (11-5, 11-2, 7-11, 11-7). Facing off against Alyssa Ritchie '17 in the seventh position, Clary took the first set, 11-7. Earning an 11-4 victory in the second, she ousted Ritchie with another 11-4 triumph in the third to log Amherst's only win against the Ephs.
Aggarwal was the only other Jeff to push a match-up to five sets, nearly coming away with a victory against Lily Grant '16 in the sixth position. Dropping the first frame, Aggarwal earned an 11-9 decision in the second and 11-8 win in the third. After evening things up with an 11-3 victory, Grant edged out Aggarwal with a 12-10 triumph in the tiebreak.
