AMHERST, Mass. – The No. 18 Amherst women's squash team fell to No. 12 George Washington, 9-0, but rebounded in its second match of the day to defeat No. 13 Franklin and Marshall, 6-3, in the final day of the Pioneer Valley Invitational.
After the 9-0 loss to George Washington, Amherst answered nicely with a 6-3 win against the 13th-ranked Diplomats to finish 3-3 overall during the weekend tournament. They are now 4-5 overall on the year.
The Jeffs earned two sweeps from the No. 4 and No. 9 positions against Franklin and Marshall. Tiana Palmer-Poroner '17 won 3-0 by scores of 11-2, 11-6 and 11-6 and Lena Rice '14 earned a 3-0 victory with scores of 11-9, 11-3 and 11-4.
Taryn Clary '16 earned a 3-1 win from the No. 7 position. After dropping the first game, she retaliated with three straight victories to claim the match. Corri Johnson '16 also earned a 3-1 win after dropping the first game, claiming the No. 8 spot.
Amherst also earned 3-2 wins from the No. 5 and No. 6 positions. Evelyn Kramer '14 won the first two games but fell in games three and four before claiming an 11-5 win in the final frame. Khushy Aggarwal '16 trailed 2-1 before rallying off two straight in the fourth and fifth games to claim the win.
The Jeffs are back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 21 to face Brown on the road at 1 p.m.
