AMHERST, Mass. - The 18th-ranked Amherst women's squash team closed out the second day of the 2013-14 Pioneer Valley Invitational with a pair of matches against No. 24 Colby and No. 11 Bates.
Shutting out the Mules 9-0, the Jeffs suffered an 7-2 setback against the Bobcats to fall to 3-4 on the season. Amherst returns for the final day of competition on Sunday, Jan. 19 against No. 12 George Washington and No. 13 Franklin & Marshall.
Leading the Jeffs against Colby, Ericka Robertson '16 won her first position match against Julie Wolpow '16, 3-1 (9-11, 11-7, 11-4, 11-8). Arielle Lehman '15 made quick work of Mikaela Johnson '16 in the second slot, 3-0 (11-4, 11-8, 11-2), while Meyha Sud '16 handled Tara Tischio '15, 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-7).
With her fourth position match-up against Liz Brehman '15 knotted at a frame apiece, Tiana Palmer-Poroner '17 secured an 11-6 decision in a pivotal third set. Brehman took the fourth by a score of 11-7 to force a tiebreaker, but Palmer-Poroner notched an 11-7 victory of her own to claim the win.
Evelyn Kramer '14 was triumphant over Ameilia Barnett '14, 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-3), in the fifth spot, while Khushy Aggarwal '16 dispatched of her Mule counterpart in three sets. Taryn Clary '16 upended Maddie Hunsicker '15, 3-0 (11-9, 11-5, 11-5), while Corri Johnson '16 and Lena Rice '14 also recorded three set sweeps at the eighth and ninth positions.
Lehman notched one of Amherst's only two wins against Bates, defeating Samantha Matos '14 in the second position. After winning the first two sets by identical scores of 11-8, the junior dropped the third, 11-7. Lehman rebounded with an 11-4 decision in the final frame to record the victory. Myriam Kelly '15 downed Robertson in the first position, 3-1 (11-7, 11-6, 9-11, 11-6), while Lesea Bourke '15 ousted Sud, 3-0 (14-12, 11-9, 11-4).
Chloe Mitchell '15 needed just three sets to take care of Palmer-Poroner, while Rakey Drammeh '14 handled Kramer, 3-0 (11-4, 11-7, 11-9). Tied at a set apiece after two, Aggarwal eventually fell to Lauren Williams in the sixth position, 3-1 (11-6, 7-11, 11-7, 11-2), while Clary outlasted Charlotte Cabot '17 in a see-saw five-setter, 3-2 (7-11, 11-8, 11-3, 11-13, 11-6).
Ashley Brooks '14 and Emma Dunn '17 closed out the lineup with wins over Johnson and Rice in the eighth and ninth positions, respectively.
