Midway through the first, Bantam senior Katie Giberson took a shot that bounced off of the crossbar, nearly putting Trinity on the board with the frame's only near miss.HARTFORD, Conn. - Sophomore Kate Sisk (Sudbury, Mass.) broke a scoreless deadlock in the 53rd minute to help the 18th-ranked Amherst College women's soccer team upend NESCAC rival Trinity College 2-0 at Campus Field in Hartford, Conn.
With the win, Amherst improved to 6-0-0 (4-0-0 NESCAC) on the season - the program's best start since the 1979 squad began the year with a seven-game win streak. Having posted a 7-2-2 mark against the Bantams since 2000, the Lord Jeffs moved to 14-10-7 all-time against Trinity.
Amherst came out firing in the first half, but a save by Trinity senior goalkeeper Lily Pepper and a strong defensive play by Courtney DeVinney '12 kept the game scoreless in the early going.
Still scoreless following the intermission, the Lord Jeffs were finally able to get one of their 14 shots past Pepper, when Sisk scored her first goal in 22 career games to give Amherst a 1-0 lead. Outshooting the Bantams 7-2 in the second half, the Jeffs later seized control, with fellow sophomore Chloe McKenzie (Upper Marlboro, Md.) notching her second marker of the season in the 80th minute.
Hoping to keep pace, Giberson recorded a pair of shots in the final five minutes, but a sliding stop by Amherst senior goalkeeper Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, Conn.) on one of the tries preserved the shutout - her fourth of the season and 15th in her career.
Amherst, which held a 14-7 shot advantage and a 5-3 edge in corners, returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 against Tufts.
