CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Amherst College men's and women's squash teams were shut out by Harvard University Saturday morning, as the Lord Jeff squads each moved to 1-1 on the young season.
The Harvard women (5-0) demonstrated why they entered the weekend as the top-ranked collegiate team in the country, improving to 10-0 all-time against Amherst by winning 27 of the match's 28 games. Standing out for the Lord Jeffs was sophomore Lena Rice (Philadelphia, Pa.), who took the first game from Vidya Rajan at number six by an 11-9 score.
The Amherst men had a similar outcome against the fifth-ranked Crimson (5-0), who improved to 48-0 against the Lord Jeffs since 1941 by winning 27 of 28 games. First-year Peter Mack (North Eastham, Mass.) was involved in the match of the day at number nine, as he won his first game against Harvard's Shaw McKean, 12-10. Mack hung with his counterpart the rest of the way but ultimately dropped the remaining three games in close fashion, 14-12, 11-7 and 11-8.
The Amherst women will travel to take on Smith College on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The Lord Jeff men will not return to action until Saturday, Dec. 10, when they host MIT and Northeastern.
