Women's Lacrosse Falls to Williams on the Road, 9-8

From a Williams College release

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA– The Amherst College women's lacrosse team held an 8-3 lead over NESCAC and Little Three archrival Williams College this afternoon, but could not hold on as the host Ephs pulled out a 9-8 win.  Amherst (6-3/3-2 NESCAC) fell to Williams (5-4/3-3 NESCAC) for the first time since 2000.

Amherst opened the scoring, with rookie Wyatt Davis (Concord, MA) putting one away early in the first half. Williams sophomore Margie Fulton beat Amherst goalie Lamia Harik (Rye  Brook, NY) at the 25:05 and 22:00 marks, putting Williams up 2-1, but Amherst then went on the offensive, scoring four unanswered goals. The Jeffs took a 5-2 lead on scores from from Davis, Allie Horwitz (Woodbridge, CT), and Marta Randall (Monkton, MD).

The Ephs started off slowly in the second half, with the Lord Jeffs continuing to dominate the play. Amherst scored three more goals before Williams was finally able to return fire. Everything changed with seven minutes left in the game, when freshman Sam Weinstein got the Eph offense rolling, scoring her first goal of the game.

The Ephs would go on to score six goals in the remaining minutes of the game. Weinstein scored a pair, and senior co-captain Whitney Thayer also contributed. Senior Tina Nawrocki scored netted two goals in the final two minutes to tie, and win the game.

Senior co-captain Kathleen Scheld (Yorktown Heights, NY), Horwitz and Davis each finished the day with a pair of goals for Amherst, while Nawrocki paced the Ephs with four goals and an assist. Harik made six saves in the loss, while Julia Schreiber turned away 11 shots in net for Williams.

Amherst will look to rebound on Thursday afternoon when Middlebury comes to town for a mid-week NESCAC tilt. The Jeffs and Panthers will take the turf at Gooding Field at 5:30 p.m.
