CLAREMONT, CA – The Amherst College men's tennis team faced three final matches to finish off their spring break trip in California. In the morning, part of the team competed in the semifinals of the Stag Hen tournament at Claremont-Mudd Scripps, while the other half of the team took on California Tech in Redding, CA.
Against Cal Tech, Alex Gumport (Summit, NJ) and Jon Thaler (Villanova, PA) started things off on the right foot, quickly winning their match at number two doubles. In singles play, senior Peter Stein (Rockport, ME) was able to pick up his first collegiate singles win in dominant fashion, winning 6-0, 6-0, guiding the team to a convincing 9-0 victory.
In the semifinals of the Stag Hen tournament the Lord Jeffs took on Pomona-Pitzer. After winning two out of three doubles matches, the Lord Jeffs were able to pull out all six singles matches en route to a 8-1 victory. The charge was led by Amherst freshmen Wes Waterman (Palm Beach Gardens, FL), Andrew Jung (Battle Creek, MI), and Julian Camacho (New York, NY), who quickly clinched the match.
In the finals of the Stag Hen tournament, Amherst faced third-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The Jeffs fell behind 1-2 in doubles play and were never able to recover in singles, falling 7-2. Sophomore Priit Gross (Tartu, Estonia) was able to pull out the lone singles victory of the match, defeating CMS's Russel Brockett in straight sets.
The Lord Jeffs team will now take the next couple of days off, before they take on Skidmore College and Vassar College at Skidmore on Saturday, March 28th.
