ORANGE/REDLAND, CA - The Amherst College men's tennis team went 3-1 over the past two days of Spring Break. During the stint, the Jeffs picked up wins over Redlands, Chapman and Occidental, while falling to Concordia.
Against Redlands, Amherst was able to take two out of three doubles points to gain momentum heading into the singles matches. Despite a noisy crowd, the Lord Jeffs were able to deliver in singles play, losing only one match. Particularly impressive was Priit Gross's (Tartu, Estonia) win, giving up only four games at number five singles.
The second group of players had a very tough time handling the firepower of top-ranked NAIA opponent Concordia University. The international squad from Irvine took an early lead after doubles, and continued to play strong in every singles spot. Only at number one doubles Scott London (Chevy Chase, MD) and Julian Camacho (New York, NY) were able to hang tough till the end, eventually falling to Concordia's doubles team 8-6.
Yesterday, Amherst defeated Chapman University 9-0 and Occidental College 7-2 to remain undefeated in Division III competition. The team was off to a quick start sweeping doubles play against Chapman University.
Heading into the singles matches the team was looking to clinch the match with quick wins. Chapman was able to hang tough, however, putting up fights at the number one and two singles spots.
At number one singles first-year Austin Chafetz (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA) battled Chapman's top player Clifford Yook, while at number two singles sophomore Moritz Koenig (Hamburg, Germany) was in for a close match with Christian Isip. In the end both players were able to close out the match, leading Amherst to an impressive 9-0 victory.
At the same time the second half of the team took on Occidental College. Led by first-years Julian Camacho (New York, NY), Wes Waterman (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) and Robby Sorrel (Scarsdale, NY) the young squad was able to close out a convincing 7-2 victory.
The Lord Jeffs will return to more action, as they play their 9th and 10th match within a 5-day stretch tomorrow. Amherst takes on Whittier College in an other dual match, as well as Colorado College in the opening round of the Stag Hen tournament held by Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
