Amherst Teams Place 12th at New England Championships

BOSTON, MA – The Amherst College men's and women's cross country teams each placed 12th at the New England Championships Saturday afternoon at Franklin Park. The Lord Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Oct. 24 when they host the Little III Championships.

UMass Lowell and UMass Amherst took home first and second place on the men's side, respectively, with Glarius Rop of AIC winning the individual title in 24 minutes and 22 seconds. Brown University and Boston College finished one-two on the women's side, with the University of Maine's Corey Connor leading the way at 17:36.

Amherst put in the second best performance among the NESCAC schools in the men's field, as the Jeffs finished ahead of Middlebury, Tufts, Bowdoin, Wesleyan, Bates and Connecticut College. Williams, which placed eighth, was the lone school to place ahead of Amherst. On the women's side, Amherst finished behind Williams (7th) and Middlebury (9th) but ahead of five NESCAC schools.

Leading the Lord Jeff men was senior Carlyle Eubank (Santa Ynez, CA) with a time of 25:37, which placed him 41st overall. Five seconds behind him was fellow senior Dan Murner (Crestwood, KY), with junior Steve Corsello (Skaneateles, NY) also finishing under the 26-minute barrier at 25:49. Rounding out the Jeffs' top five runners were junior John McGrail (Arlington, VA) and senior Eric Holaday (Moorestown, NJ), who finished within two seconds of each other.

On the women's side, the Jeffs were once again led by senior Sophia Galleher (Denver, CO), who placed 13th overall with a time of 18:20. Reigning NESCAC Performer of the Week Ali Simeone found herself in familiar territory by finishing with Amherst's second fastest time, as the first-year standout placed 38th at 18:43. Sophomore Melissa Sullivan (Dallas, TX) ran a 19:05, with juniors Hallie Schwab (Stone Ridge, NY) and Christina Wong (Honolulu, HI) rounding out the team's top five.
