MIDDLEBURY, VT – Trinity College's C.J. Yano converted a free position attempt with a shot over the keeper's shoulder with 1:32 left in double overtime to lift the Bantams to a 10-9 win over Amherst in women's lacrosse NESCAC semifinal action at Middlebury College. The Bantams will take on Colby, a 10-8 upset winner over top-seeded Middlebury, in the NESCAC Championship game at noon on Sunday.
Amherst led 3-2 before Trinity's Carolyn Wolcott tied the game at the 17:47 mark of the first half. Amherst closed the half on a 3-0 run, including a pair of goals from junior Amy Craig (Denver, CO), to take a 6-3 lead into the halftime break.
Trinity came out firing in the second half, scoring the first five goals to take an 8-6 lead. Anne Cook started the run, followed by a pair from Rachel Romanosky to tie the game at six. Alison Urquhart and Sarah Remes followed to give the Bantams the lead.
Amherst closed the game with a 2-0 spurt, forcing it into overtime. Neither team had a shot in the first overtime session, while the Jeffs took a 9-8 lead with 34 seconds to go on a nice pass from junior Mary Noonan (West Roxbury, MA) down low to sophomore Tyler Tory-Murphy (Sea Cliff, NY).
Trinity won the ensuing draw control and raced down the field, earning a free position shot that was saved by Amherst's Linda McEvoy (Rochester, NY). The rebound bounced right to Jennifer Calver, who quickly scored to force the game into a sudden-death second overtime period.
After exchanging a pair of turnovers, Trinity settled the ball down and worked the offense, with Yano earning the free position game-winner at the 1:32 mark.
Calver paced Trinity with three goals, while Yanofsky and Romanowsky each netted two. Tory-Murphy and Trapp each scored twice for the Jeffs. Michelle Smith made 14 saves in goal for Trinity, while McEvoy had 23 stops for Amherst.
The Lord Jeffs move to 13-3 on the season and will hope for an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament, with teams to be selected Sunday night.
