Jeffs Can't Hang on Against Top-Ranked Saint Norbert

OSWEGO, NY - The No. 1-ranked St. Norbert Green Knights scored three third-period goals to defeat Amherst College 3-1 in the championship game of the Pathfinder Bank Oswego Hockey Classic in Oswego, NY on Sunday afternoon. Saint Norbert, ranked atop the latest USCHO.com Division III Men's Poll, improved its record to 11-1-1 on the season and Amherst is now 4-3-2 overall.

Amherst first-year Luke Arnold (Lincoln, MA) scored with 36 seconds left in the first period and the Lord Jeffs held the lead until the final 10 minutes of the contest, when the Green Knights broke through for three tallies.

Saint Norbert pressed for the tying goal and had a penalty shot awarded to Matt Boyd with 13:52 left in the third period, but Boyd's penalty shot deke was stopped by Amherst's rookie goalie Cole Anderson (Sylvan Lake, Alberta) to preserve the narrow one-goal advantage.

The Green Knights eventually tied the score with 9:45 left to play in the third period on a turnaround wrister by Marc Belanger that beat Anderson over the shoulder from the slot. Boyd scored the eventual game-winner with 5:20 left in the contest, assisted by Belanger and Dubas. Ryan Peterson added an empty-net goal for the Green Knights with 43 seconds left in the game.

Saint Norbert goalie Blake Bashor had 18 saves in the game and Amherst's Anderson made 29 stops.

Shane Wheeler of Saint Norbert was named as the tournament's Most Valuable Player and was on the all-tournament team. He was joined by teammates Nick Tibisz on defense and goalie Kyle Jones, who was the winning goalie in Saturday's semifinal victory for the Green Knights. Amherst's Arnold was on the all-tournament team at forward and was joined by junior defenseman Rylan Burns (Jasper, Alberta).
