AMHERST, MA – The Amherst men's soccer squad remains undefeated this evening after a gutsy 1-0 win over Springfield College. Junior midfield Kevin Dolan (Peabody, MA) netted his first goal of the season for the Jeffs in a physical game which saw 23 fouls and 4 cautions.
For a mid-week non-conference game, the buzz around Hitchcock Field was surprisingly tense as the game kicked-off. In the wake of a number of key injuries during the weekends' games, the Jeffs had a somewhat different line-up against Springfield than they were used to showing. It was one of the unusual suspects, Dolan, who stepped into the line-up and played one of his best games.
Dolan scored early for the Jeffs in just the ninth minute, easing tensions for a while, and settling the nerves of the fans, but Springfield showed a lot of heart, keeping the lead at just one goal for the next 81 minutes.
The Jeffs dominated the run of play, but seemed just one nice finish away from blowing the game wide-open all afternoon. The Jeffs out-shot the Pride 23-4 and won the corner kick battle 8-3, looking dangerous throughout the day.
Junior defender William Warner (Houston, TX) got his name into the box score by setting up Dolan's goal on a long free kick, earning his first points of the season.
Pride goalie Ryan Driscoll (Wilmington, DE) had a tough day in net, making 8 saves in the losing effort, while sophomore Jeff Grover (Framingham, MA) had 4 saves for the Jeffs.
The Jeffs return to action this weekend when they travel to NESCAC rival Bowdoin Saturday at noon.
