Men's Soccer

Late Goal by Lovett Gives Jeffs 1-0 Win Over WNEC

SPRINGFIELD, MA - The Amherst College men's soccer team won its tenth game of the season in a non-conference match-up with Western New England College Wednesday. The Jeffs' constant pressure on offense and solid goalkeeping allowed Amherst to shutout the Golden Bears for a 1-0 victory.

The game remained tied at halftime despite Amherst's constant pressure.  The lone goal of the game did not come until the 75th minute of play, when the Jeffs were given a free kick from 40 yards out.  The Golden Bears' senior goalie Chris Wilk (Derry, NH) was able to punch the free kick out of his territory, but sophomore Jake Duker (Newton, MA) ripped a shot from 20 yards out.  Senior Ian Lovett (Newton, MA) re-directed Duker's shot into the net, giving Amherst a 1-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining.

The Jeffs kept their composure on the road despite a foul count of 21 for WNEC, resulting in two yellow cards being issued to the Golden Bears.  Amherst remained focused on the task at hand and kept the pressure on, out-shooting WNEC 22 to 10 on the day.

Sophomore Jeffrey Grover (Framingham, MA) played a solid 86 minutes in net, and combined with senior Mohamed Zeidan (Eden Prarie, MN) for Amherst's fifth shutout of the season.  Derry played well in net for the Golden Bears, recording 10 saves on the day.

Amherst returns to action this weekend when they take on NESCAC rival Colby College Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
