SPRINGFIELD, MA - The third-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team posted a 14-11 non-conference victory at Springfield College on Wednesday night. Senior forward Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) led the way with five goals and an assist as the Jeffs remained undefeated at 2-0, while Springfield fell to 3-2.
Amherst took a 2-0 lead out of the gate as sophomore Alyssa Briody (Hopewell, NJ) dished out assists to Harmeling and fellow sophomore Dana Kuper (Denver, CO), but the Pride responded with back-to-back goals from junior Holly Carmody to knot the score nine minutes into play. The Jeffs retaliated with a trio of scores, including a pair from Harmeling. Springfield pulled back within one on consecutive tallies, but Amherst tacked on four straight to close the half and take a 9-4 advantage into the break.
Springfield attempted to rally in the second half, but the Jeffs would answer every time the hosts scored, and Springfield could get no closer than three (13-10 with 5:26 remaining) throughout the remainder of regulation.
Kuper, fellow sophomore Lauren Dudley (Baltimore, MD) and junior Scotty Hanley (Baltimore, MD) each finished with a pair of scores, while Briody and junior Caitie Parker (Bethesda, MD) each found the back of the net. Sophomore Liz Wise (Scarsdale, NY) paced the Amherst defense with seven forced turnovers, while senior co-captain goalie Liv D'Ambrosio (Farmington, CT) had nine saves.
Junior Rachel Lampros led the Pride with four goals, while Carmody added three. First-year netminder Kristin Vaccaro grabbed 11 saves in a losing effort.
Amherst opens conference play Saturday at 1 p.m. at archrival Williams College.
