Fourth-Ranked Jeffs Pound Conn. College, 18-8

FROM A CONNECTICUT COLLEGE RELEASE

April 6, 2004

NEW LONDON, CT - Senior tri-captains Jackie Sargent (Concord MA), Liz Martin (Baltimore, MD) and Allison Aldrich (Cornwall, VT) combined for 15 goals to lead the fourth-ranked Amherst women's lacrosse team to an 18-8 win at NESCAC foe Connecticut College on Tuesday. Sargent led all scorers with six goals, and Martin and Aldrich netted five and four scores, respectively, as the Jeffs improved to 7-1 (4-1 NESCAC), rebounding from Saturday's 17-10 loss to top-ranked Middlebury.

Amherst took control from the opening draw, mounting a 5-1 lead after Sargent's second score at the 18:27-mark. The hosts responded with four answered goals over the next 2:54, including two by senior Emily Stieff, to knot the score at 5-5. Aldrich answered with a trio of goals during a 4-0 Amherst run, and the Jeffs took a 9-5 edge into the break.

Amherst's defense set the tone in the second half, allowing just three scores down the stretch. The Camels netted the first goal of the session, but Amherst poured in seven straight to put the game out of reach. Amherst junior Ashley Harmeling (N. Reading, MA) found the net three times, while she, Sargent, Martin, Aldrich, sophomores Margaret Chute (Pawtucket, RI) and Scotty Hanley (Sparks, MD), and first-year Lauren Dudley (Butler, MD) each dealt assists. Stieff led the hosts with three goals, and sophomore Maggie Driscoll dished out three assists.

Amherst junior goalie Olivia D'Ambrosio (Farmington, CT) posted five saves, while junior Paige Diamond had 18 for Conn. College, which fell to 3-6 (1-5 NESCAC) with the loss.
