13th-Ranked Jeffs Handle St. Thomas, 4-2

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - Sophomore Bradford Craigen (Kitchener, Ontario), senior Mike Kreger (Glenview, IL), junior Jon Hill (Averill Park, NY) and rookie Sean Ellis (Springfield, MA) each found the back of the net during a frenetic six-minute stretch in the third period as the Amherst College men's hockey team downed the University of St. Thomas 4-2 at Mariucci Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota on Saturday.

Amherst first-year goalie Dan Smith (Rochester, MN) tallied a whopping 41 saves as St. Thomas outshot the Jeffs by a wide margin, 43-18. The host Tommies had a six-game unbeaten steak snapped with the loss, falling to 4-5-2.

Taking a 0-0 tie into the closing session, St. Thomas' Anthony Blumer opened the scoring with a power-play goal 7:10 into the third period. Amherst used unassisted goals by Craigen at 8:06 and Kreger at 9:13 to take a 2-1 lead. The Toms' Dustan Lick then knotted the score 2-2 with a goal at 10:28, but the Jeffs answered with go-ahead and insurance tallies by Hill at 11:49 and Ellis at 12:29. Amherst sophomore A.J. Greco (Williamsville, NY) assisted on Hill's game-winner, while fellow sophomore Marc Russell (Essex, VT) and first-year Brandon Zangel (Highlands Ranch, CO) helped seal the win, feeding Ellis for his third goal of the season.

Amherst (6-1-1) returns to action Sunday at 5 p.m. at non-league foe Gustavus Adolphus.
