MIDDLEBURY, VT - The second-ranked Amherst College women's lacrosse team fell to top-ranked two-time defending NCAA champion Middlebury College, 16-5, Sunday at Kohn Artificial Field. With the loss, the Jeffs drop to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Panthers extended their winning streak to 41 games, improving to 6-0 and 4-0.
Middlebury senior attacker Kristin Hanley (Seattle, WA) pierced the scoring column 13 seconds into the contest, giving the hosts an early lead. The Panthers extended the advantage to 5-1 before Jeff junior midfielder Jackie Sargent (Concord, MA) scored, cutting the deficit to 5-2. Middlebury tallied two of the final three goals of the opening half to take a 7-3 lead at the break.
The Panthers notched four goals early in the second stanza to jump ahead, 11-3. The teams exchanged the final two goals of the game to round the scoring out at 16-5. Senior goalie Brooke Diamond (Longmeadow, MA) finished with 19 saves for the Jeffs, while Middlebury junior Sarah Grenert (Sewickely, PA) and sophomore Johanna Rosenfield (Brunswick, ME) combined to stop six shots.
Amherst returns to action Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at NESCAC foe Connecticut College.
