Men's Hockey Routs St. Anselm, 6-1

HOOKSETT, NH - After falling to New England College on Friday, the Amherst College men's hockey team rebounded with a 6-1 victory at ECAC East foe St. Anselm College on Saturday. Junior forward Mike Kreger (Glenview, IL) and sophomore forward Beau Kretzman (Edina, MN) each notched a pair of goals, while rookie netminder Sean Lynch (Essex Junction, VT) turned aside 39 shots for the Jeffs.

Kreger broke the ice 3:09 into the contest with his first goal. Shortly thereafter, he netted his second of the game before Kretzman found the back of the net, giving the Jeffs a 3-0 to end the opening period. The Jeffs picked up right where they left off in the second, striking for another trio of goals. Senior defender Erich Schram (Madison, WI) ignited the barrage on the power play, assisted by rookies Ted Bickel (Minnetonka, MN) and Jack Greeley (Scituate, MA). Sophomore defender Bill Jenkins (Edina, MN) followed with his first goal of the season. Kretzman then scored his second goal, extending the lead to 6-0.

Lynch was denied the shutout 7:13 into the final session when sophomore Keegan Rosenberger (Seekonk, MA) found the back of the net on the power play. Sophomore Jim Merola (N. Providence, RI) and first-year Bob Lemelin (Hamilton, MA) combined to finish with 17 saves for the Hawks. First-year Steve Nelson (Wayzata, MN), sophomore Scott Aldrich (Wilmington, MA), Bickel and Greeley each dished out two assists for the visitors.

With the victory, the Jeffs improve to 5-11-2 overall and 5-7-1 in league play, while St. Anselm drops to 6-10-2 and 3-9-1.

Amherst returns to action Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting NESCAC and Little Three rival Williams College.
