NORTHFIELD, VT - The 11th-ranked Amherst College men's hockey team dropped its first loss of the season, 6-0, at fourth-ranked ECAC East rival Norwich University on Saturday. Junior Paul Mattucci scored twice as the Cadets improved to 5-1 (4-0 ECAC East). Amherst first-year goalie Dan Smith (Rochester, MN) collected 27 saves in the loss as the Jeffs fell to 5-1-1 (2-1-1 ECAC East).
Norwich led 1-0 at the end of the first period as senior Nick Cote scored on the power play at the 9:14-mark. The Cadets added three more goals in the second session as senior Matt Schmidt found the net once and Mattucci scored twice. In the final period, junior Kurtis McLean netted a short-handed goal at the midway point, and senior Chris Petracco capped the Norwich scoring with just under five minutes remaining. Junior Kevin Schieve had 16 saves in the win.
Amherst returns to action Saturday, January 3 at 1 p.m. at Mariucci Arena in Minneapolis, MN against non-conference opponent St. Thomas College.
