AMHERST, MA - The Amherst College men's hockey team remained undefeated, dealing visiting non-conference foe Wentworth its first loss of the season on Tuesday night, 4-2. The Jeffs used two goals from junior co-captain Beau Kretzman (Edina, MN), and a goal each from senior defender Chris Norqual (Wilmington, MA) and senior forward Mike Kreger (Glenview, IL) en route to their second victory of the season.
Wentworth took an early lead with a power-play goal from sophomore defender Blayne Goodman (Westlock, Alberta), but the Jeffs rattled off three first-period goals to establish control of the game. Norqual tickled the twine first, taking a feed from sophomore Steve Nelson (Wayzata, MN) and sending home a shot from the point. Kreger netted his second goal of the year on a rebound off a Norqual miss just a minute later. In the last minute of the opening session, Kretzman punched in a rebound to give the Jeffs a 3-1 lead. Nelson fed Kretzman for his second score, as Kretzman took the pass, avoided the Leopard defense and beat the goalie far side for his fifth goal of the season. Wentworth tried to mount a comeback as junior forward Brad Carpenter (Kamloops, British Columbia) pushed in a power-play goal halfway through the final period, but the Amherst defense held on for the win.
Amherst first-year goalie Josh Fillman (Charlestown, MA) posted 23 saves in his first collegiate start as the Jeffs improved to 2-0-1. Wentworth senior netminder Raj Bhangoo (Caladon East, Ontario) collected 33 saves in the loss as the Leopards fell to 5-1.
The Jeffs return to action next Saturday at 7 p.m. against visiting Cortland State in the opening round of the Ben McCabe Invitational Tournament.
