SALEM, MA - The Amherst College men's hockey team was downed at ECAC East foe Salem State College, 10-4, Friday night. First-year forward Ted Bickel (Minnetonka, MN) paced the Jeffs with a goal and an assist, while senior defender Erich Schram (Madison, WI) and rookie forward Steve Nelson (Wayzata, MN) each chipped in with a pair of assists.
Amherst drew first blood 16:16 into the contest when sophomore forward Scott Aldrich (Wilmington, MA) tallied his seventh goal of the season, assisted by junior defender John McNicholas (Lake Forest, IL) and Nelson. Moments later, the hosts countered when junior forward Mike Veins (Chicopee, MA) hit the back of the net to even the score at 1-1 heading into the second.
Salem State took the lead 6:00 into the second when senior defender Nick Stauder (Vernon, CT) tickled the twine on the power play. Shortly thereafter, Jeff junior forward Mike Kreger (Glenview, IL) notched his sixth goal of the year to knot the score at 2-2. The hosts tallied a pair of late goals to take a 4-2 lead into the third.
Salem State tacked on six goals in the final session to seal the victory. Senior netminder Justin Jagher (Framingham, MA) and rookie Sean Lynch (Essex Junction, VT) combined to make 27 saves for the Jeffs, while senior Kaleb Christenson (International Falls, MN) turned aside 27 shots for Salem State.
With the loss, Amherst drops to 3-8-2 overall and 3-4-1 in conference play. The Jeffs return to action Saturday at 4 p.m. at ECAC East foe Southern Maine University.
