Men's Hockey Posts Fifth Tie, 5-5, at Mass. College

NORTH ADAMS, MA - The Amherst College men's hockey team posted its fifth tie of the season, skating to a 5-5 deadlock at ECAC East rival Mass. College on Saturday. The Jeffs (4-7-5/4-3-4) took a 4-0 lead into the third period against the Mohawks, only to surrender five goals in the final stanza before a scoreless overtime.

First-year phenoms Bill Jenkins (Edina, MN) and Beau Kretzman (Edina, MN) gave the visitors a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals within a two-minute span in the opening period. After a scoreless second, sophomore Mike Kreger (Glenview, IL) and first-year Scott Aldrich (Wilmington, MA) extended Amherst's advantage to a seemingly insurmountable four-goal cushion with 11:14 left in regulation.

Undaunted, Mass. College exploded with four goals over the next 7:32, tying the score at 4-4 on Nick Cote's second consecutive tally with 3:42 remaining. Kretzman rebounded just 39 seconds later with his team-leading 17th goal of the season to put the Jeffs back on top 5-4. Unbelievably, Cote struck again with his third goal in less than four minutes - this time a short-handed tally - knotting the score at 5-5 with just 1:32 left in regulation, sending the game into overtime.

Amherst junior goaltender Justin Jagher (Framingham, MA) finished with 31 saves, including five in the scoreless extra session, for Amherst. Ryan Kiernan turned away 34 shots for Mass. College.

The Jeffs return to action Friday at 7 p.m. against visiting ECAC East rival New England College.
