Men's Hockey Snaps Two Game Skid with 6-4 Win at St. Michael's

S. BURLINGTON, VT - The Amherst College men's hockey team scored twice in the first five minutes of the third period to snap a 4-4 tie and defeat host St. Michael's College, 6-4, Saturday afternoon at Cairns Arena. Greg Carr put Amherst ahead 1:48 into the third period as he wristed a shot from the slot through the pads of Purple Knights' goalie Simon Theberge. John McNicholas then gave the Jeffs a two-goal lead with a slapper from the right point at 4:20.

Both offenses came out firing as each team scored three times over the first 20 minutes. The Purple Knights jumped on top just 50 seconds into the game as Chris Gross wristed one in from the right face-off circle before Amherst tied the game four minutes later on a nice deflection in front by Scott Aldrich off a shot by Bill Jenkins.

St. Michael's took a two-goal lead on a pair of breakaway goals off of Amherst blueline turnovers. Justin Quenneville scored a shorthanded goal at the 6:10 mark and Daykin Marini followed five minutes later with a nifty deek past Amherst goalie Jaffrie Perrotti.

Amherst fought back to tie the game 3-3 before the end of the first period on a pair of goals from Erik DiNardo with 6:59 left and then just 59 seconds before the intermission.

Quenneville picked up his second goal of the game and gave the Purple Knights a 4-3 lead with a power play goal halfway through the second period, but Amherst tied the game just six seconds before intermission as Beau Kretzman skated over the blueline and drilled a 30-foot shot just inside the right post.

Kretzman finished with a goal and two assists for Amherst (2-2-2), while Carr had a goal and an assist. Jenkins and Erich Schram each added two assists for the Jeffs, while Perrotti had 22 saves. Theberge finished with 33 saves for St. Michael's (1-4-0), while Gavin Faretra had two assists.
