SPRINGFIELD, MA - After jumping out to a quick lead on sophomore forward Franklin Perry's (Hartford, CT) team-leading fourth goal of the season, the Amherst college men's soccer team fell to host Springfield College in overtime, 2-1, on Tuesday. Springfield senior Mike Russo scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner on a penalty kick in the 95th minute.
After Perry scored in the early minutes of the game, assisted by Jeff Cantwell (Randolph, NJ) and Chris Kane (Marblehead, MA), the Jeffs couldn't keep up the defensive pressure, ceding an unassisted goal to Russo at 40:13. The scoring action withered in the second half, as the teams traded the ball for a 1-1 end to regulation.
Overtime saw a penalty kick by Russo nose by Amherst senior goalie Bill Orum (Greenwich, CT) to end the contest. Orum marked three saves on the day.
On Saturday, the Jeffs will head to Trinity College for an 11 a.m. matchup with the Bantams, before turning their energies to the NESCAC Tournament quarterfinals on Sunday.
