Amherst College men's soccer and Head Coach Justin Serpone have announced the hiring of Bill Schmid as an assistant coach for the 2018 season.
A native of Wethersfield, Connecticut, Schmid comes to Amherst after serving as the Interim Head Coach at Springfield College this past spring. Schmid, who attended Springfield and was a four-year member of the Pride soccer team, served as an assistant coach with the team during their 2017 NCAA Tournament appearance, which ended here in penalty kicks to Serpone's Mammoths.
"I am incredibly excited to work with such a talented team and coaching staff," said Schmid. "I'm really looking forward to meeting all the players this fall and working with such a model coach like Coach Serpone. I can't wait to do everything I can to help the program continue to compete for a national championship."
Schmid holds both a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education and a Master's Degree in Sports Psychology from Springfield, as well as a United Soccer Coaches national diploma. He graduated as a licensed physical education teacher and was a 4-year starter on the men's soccer team, including a team captain during his senior year.
During his two years of graduate work, Schmid served as a graduate assistant with the team before taking over after the resignation of the head coach. His coaching record with the Pride is an impressive 33-3-4.
"We're excited to have Bill on staff. He is a promising young coach with a bright future," noted Serpone, who has been at Amherst for 11 seasons. A five-time NESCAC champion who led the program to its first NCAA National Championship in 2015, Serpone was just named one of New England Soccer Journal's 50 Most Influential People.
The tandem will kick off their season on September 5th with a 7:30 PM game at Wentworth Institute of Technology.
