NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - A balanced offensive outburst powered the Amherst College women's soccer team to a dominant 5-1 victory over local rival Smith CollegeTuesday afternoon. Five different Mammoths found the back of the net as Amherst controlled the pace of play from kickoff to the final whistle.
After trading goals midway through the opening period, Amherst responded by scoring twice in a nine-minute span to carry a 3-1 lead into halftime. The Mammoths maintained relentless pressure after the break, outshooting Smith 11-2 in the second half and adding two late insurance tallies to seal the victory.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* Amherst broke the deadlock in the 26th minute. Katerina Davis drove down the right wing and delivered a precise ball to Caroline Coletti, who finished cleanly to give the Mammoths a 1-0 lead with her third goal of the season.
* Smith College responded quickly in the 33rd minute to tie the game. Melia Espinosa set up Keala Barnes, who converted the opportunity to level the score at 1-1.
* The Mammoths needed just 76 seconds to reclaim the momentum. In the 34th minute, Allison Hayes seized on an opportunity and struck unassisted to put Amherst back in front, 2-1.
* Amherst extended its lead just before the intermission. In the 43rd minute, Amelie Zeitz drove through the defense and tucked home the ball Pao Monter crossed to, sending the Mammoths into halftime with a 3-1 advantage.
* The Mammoths put the game out of reach in the 81st minute. Maddy Varela created space near the box and struck an unassisted goal to make it 4-1.
* With less than ten seconds left in the game, Amherst capped off its dominant performance. After two corners, Katie Pedersen got the ball to Pao Monter, who finished in the 90th minute to round out the 5-1 victory.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* Coletti, Hayes, Zeitz, Varela, and Monter each recorded a goal for Amherst, while Monter, Davis, and Pedersen earned assists.
* Barnes scored the lone goal for Smith College, assisted by Espinosa.
