Mammoths tripped up at Williams, 3-1

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. – The Amherst College women's soccer team battled back from an early deficit to draw even with Williams College, but the Ephs responded with a pair of goals to earn a 3-1 victory over the Mammoths on Saturday on Cole Field.

* Williams opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Reece Willison collected the ball near the edge of the penalty area and fired a shot off the post and into the upper corner, putting the Ephs ahead, 1-0.

* The Mammoths responded early in the second half through Emma Darling. Darling made a run toward goal and saw her initial effort denied by the Williams goalkeeper, but stayed with the play and regained possession on the right side of the box. She sent a cross back toward goal that deflected off a Williams defender and into the net in the 54th minute, tying the game at 1-1.

* Williams answered just over a minute later. Goalkeeper Chelsea Mohammed sent a long ball over the Amherst back line and into the path of Maya Lloyd. Lloyd ran onto the ball and had her initial attempt stopped, but followed the rebound and knocked it into the net to restore the Ephs' lead, 2-1.

* The Ephs added an insurance goal in the 78th minute off a set piece from the right side of Amherst's defensive half. Olivia Bevilacqua sent a low free kick into the penalty area, where Alli Aleman met the service and slotted it home to extend the Williams lead to 3-1.

BY THE NUMBERS:

* Williams finished with a 17-12 advantage in shots, including a 7-4 edge in shots on goal, while the two sides each earned four corner kicks. Darling led the Mammoths with five shots, putting three on target, while Amherst goalkeeper Corina Bellermann recorded four saves.
