MIDDLETOWN, Conn. — Amherst College men's cross country team won the Cardinal Invitational on Saturday at Long Lane Farm, taking the team title with 45 points in a nine-team field that included several nationally ranked programs.

WPI finished second with 62 points, followed by Wesleyan (71) and Washington and Lee (72).

The Mammoths, ranked No. 20 nationally, built the win on a strong front pair and a tight pack behind it, finishing 17 points clear of the runner-up. Senior Harrison Dow led Amherst, placing third overall in 24:33.6, just 21 seconds behind race winner Dylan Cote of Wesleyan, who ran 24:12.4. Sophomore Carter Bengtson followed in fifth at 24:37.1, giving the Mammoths two runners in the top five. WPI's Everett Mosher took second in 24:16.7.

Senior Parker Boyle turned in Amherst's third score, placing 10th in 25:01.9. The scoring five was completed by sophomore Caleb Barnes (13th, 25:19.4) and junior Ben Kasen (14th, 25:28.7), giving Amherst three runners within 27 seconds of one another. That pack running proved to be the difference against a deep field. Further down the order, first-year Ryan Monohan (29th, 25:56.3), senior Harrison Talcott (37th, 26:05.8) and junior Carter Rauch (52nd, 26:23.1) provided additional depth as the meet wrapped up.

"I was very excited by the team's execution and racing maturity yesterday," Amherst head coach Hannah Chappell-Dick stated. "They started out conservatively like we had talked about and worked their way up through the crowds together. This is a really encouraging step towards achieving our ultimate goal of being at our best in the post season. In 2 weeks, we'll add in our full squad to go head-to-head against interregional competition at Paul Short to try and solidify our chances at qualifying for nationals in November."
