AMHERST, MA. — The Amherst College women's soccer team fell to Middlebury College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Hitchcock Field despite holding a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks and pressing for an equalizer until the final whistle.
Middlebury's Fiona Linnau converted a penalty kick in the 30th minute for the game's only goal. Amherst generated six shots on target and forced six saves, but the Mammoths were unable to find a breakthrough against the Panthers.
With the loss, Amherst falls to 2-3-0 overall and 0-3-0 in NESCAC play, while Middlebury improves to 2-1-2 overall and 2-1-1 in conference competition.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
- Middlebury broke the scoreless deadlock in the 30th minute. After earning a penalty kick, Fiona Linnau stepped to the spot and converted at the 29:33 mark, giving the Panthers a 1-0 advantage.
- Amherst created more opportunities from corner kicks, earning five to Middlebury's two, and kept the pressure on throughout the contest. The Mammoths finished with 14 shots, including six on target, but Middlebury's goalkeeper made six saves to preserve the clean sheet.
- The Panthers held a narrow 15-14 edge in total shots and a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Amherst had chances to equalize in the second half but could not convert its set-piece opportunities, as the one-goal margin held through the final whistle.

The statistics reflected a closely fought NESCAC matchup. Middlebury edged Amherst, 15-14, in total shots and 7-6 in shots on goal, while both goalkeepers made six saves. Amherst created a significant advantage on set pieces, earning five corner kicks compared with two for the Panthers, but Middlebury's defense successfully protected its one-goal lead.
The match was also physical, with Amherst called for 17 fouls and Middlebury for 14. The Mammoths received one yellow card, while neither team was shown a red card. Middlebury was flagged offside three times, compared with one offside call against Amherst.

Amherst travels to Smith College on Tuesday, Sept. 22, for a 4 p.m. non-conference matchup in Northampton, Massachusetts. The game was originally scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 13, before being postponed.
