Mammoth Women Keep a Clean Sheet in a 4-0 Victory Over Springfield

AMHERST, MA. — Jessica Lomo scored twice and Emma Darling set up a pair of goals as the Amherst College women's soccer team shut out Springfield College, 4-0, on Wednesday evening at Gooding Field.

The Mammoths took command inside the opening seven minutes and never let up, controlling the run of play from start to finish while holding decisive edges in shots (21-6) and shots on goal (11-5). Three Amherst goalkeepers combined for five saves and the program's second clean sheet of the season. The Mammoths improved their record to 2-2-0.

Amherst returns to action on Saturday, September 19th, 12:00 PM, hosting NESCAC rival Middlebury College for Alumnae Weekend and Spirit Day.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
  • The Mammoths needed just over six minutes to break through. Darling found Katerina Davis, who finished at the 6:20 mark to put Amherst in front 1-0.
  • Amherst doubled the lead late in the first half. Davis turned provider on this one, setting up Lomo for a finish at 21:59 and a 2-0 advantage at the interval.
  • Lomo added her second of the afternoon shortly after the halftime. Darling delivered her second assist of the match, and Lomo converted at the 57:43 mark to make it 3-0.
  • Mandy Sutton capped the scoring in the 81st minute. Maya Siegel set up Sutton, who finished at 80:46 to seal the 4-0 final.
  • Springfield managed just six shots on the afternoon and never seriously threatened, with Adyson Wiseman and Katie McFerran accounting for five of Springfield's six attempts.
BY THE NUMBERS:
Amherst dominated statistically, recording a 21-6 edge in total shots and placing 11 attempts on target to Springfield's five. Lomo led all players with five shots, four of them on frame, and finished with two goals. Davis contributed a goal and an assist, while Darling recorded two assists. Molly Davidson made three saves across 45 minutes in goal, Corina Bellermann added two over 37:04, and Sara Nagle closed out the final 7:56 to preserve the shutout. Springfield's Mallory Forgatch made three saves before giving way to Micaela Tracey, who stopped four. The Mammoths held a 2-1 edge in corner kicks and committed eight fouls to Springfield's six. Neither side was shown a card.
