AMHERST, MA. – A career day from
Bridget Darcy led the No. 5 Amherst women's lacrosse team to a dominant victory on Wednesday, April 8. After a big game versus No. 12 Colby on Saturday, the Mammoths returned home to Gooding Field to take on Conn. College looking to start another win streak. A great night at the draw circle helped the Mammoths pull away in the second quarter on the way to a 15-4 victory.
With the win, Amherst improves to 10-1 overall and 5-1 in the NESCAC while the Camels fall to 2-8 (0-7 NESCAC). Next up for the Mammoths is a rivalry game at Williams, with the Mammoths looking to best the Ephs for the second straight year. The game in Williamstown is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 11.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS:
* The Mammoths got on the board first, with
Kate Becker quarterbacking from her usual spot at X and finding
Emily Petersen cutting to the net. Petersen made no mistake, scoring from close range to make it 1-0.
Bridget Finley made it two off an assist from
Bridget Darcy a few minutes later.
* Conn. put their first goal in the back of the cage after a series of defensive stops halted the Mammoths' momentum and their slower offensive pace controlled the clock. That score held until the end of the first, with Amherst hitting the break up 2-1.
* The home side dominated the second, putting up a 5-1 run to pull away, Finley's second goal of the day opened the period, unassisted, before Petersen matched her teammate's total with another tally just 14 seconds later to extend the lead to 4-1. The run continued with
Annie Lopez' first collegiate goal, but the Camels got one back to put the score at 5-2 with 8:30 to go in the half. Finley raised her first half goal total to four with two more goals, one on a free position shot, to send the game to the half with Amherst up 7-2.
* Petersen continued the goal scoring after halftime, netting the first of the half just a minute into the frame and getting another off an assist from Darcy. A third quarter hat trick came just 30 seconds later, with Amherst's number 22 finishing yet again.
* The Camels converted twice before Petersen scored her sixth, with Darcy getting her fourth assist of the contest.
Emma Crotty became the second Amherst goalscorer of the half off a Becker helper, and that ended the third with Amherst up 12-4.
* Goals from
Clara Sosa, Darcy, and Gaby Sosa rounded out the scoring and accounted for the 15-4 final.
BY THE NUMBERS:
* The Mammoths built their lead on the backs of great work in the draw circle. They won the battle for the ball 18-4.
* Petersen surpassed her career high for goals in a game with 6 total against the Camels. Darcy tripled her career high for assists in a game with 6, and scored a goal for a collegiate best 7-point night.

Jessye Salmon came on in relief and made 2 stops.
