Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

#5 Mammoths Wallop #19 Williams 13-9

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA. – Four-point games from Mia Raven and Bridget Darcy paced the No. 5 Amherst women's lacrosse team on Saturday, April 11. After cruising to a win versus Conn. College in their last game, the Mammoths took the short trip to Williams to take on their bitter rivals in a battle of nationally ranked teams. After trailing 3-0 in the first quarter, the Mammoths took over, going on a 6-1 run the rest of the first half to down the No. 19 Ephs 13-9.

With the win/loss, Amherst improves to 11-1 overall (6-1 NESCAC) while the Ephs fall to 9-4 (5-3 NESCAC). The Mammoths will return home for their final non-conference game of the campaign, hosting Westfield State on Tuesday, April 14. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS:

* The Ephs opened the scoring just under two minutes into the contest, took a 2-0 lead four minutes later and then made it 3-0 with 7:16 to go in the first quarter. The Mammoths responded on their next possession, winning the draw and drawing a green card on Williams before Clara Sosa netted a woman-up free position to reduce the deficit to 3-1.

* That goal seemed to spark something in the Mammoths, who went on a 5-1 run the rest of the half to take a three-goal lead into halftime. The first goal of the scoring spree came just 42 seconds into the second frame, with Sosa curling around the crease and finding a cutting Emily Petersen for the goal. Bridget Darcy continued her run of stellar form with an impressive solo goal: after a Williams save, the junior deflected the goalkeeper's pass at the edge of the crease, caught the loose ball, and scored on an open net to tie the game at 3-3.

* Petersen got her second of the game unassisted, Kate Becker netted one of her own, and Darcy potted her second of the quarter on a free position to close the run and take a 6-3 lead into the break.

* That momentum carried into the third quarter, as Bridget Finley converted a woman-up free position to widen the margin to four just 1:14 into the period. Darcy got another off an assist from Mia Raven, before the sophomore middie got one of her own on their next possession. Emma Crotty was the next to tally, potting a pass from Raven to make it 10-3.

* Williams closed the period on a 3-0 run to put the score at 10-6 Amherst at the start of the final quarter. Raven got the scoring started with an unassisted run at net, dodging past her defender and finishing the play to restore the five-goal margin. The Ephs would not go away, though, as the back-and-forth quarter continued with Williams putting another goal away. Emily Petersen responded, putting her foot in the ground, cutting to her left and scoring.

* A goal from Darcy and two Williams tallies in the game's final minutes accounted for the 13-9 final scoreline.
