Mammoths Rally Twice, but Bates Pulls Away Late in 12-7 Quarterfinal Loss

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst College men's lacrosse team came out with the edge early and twice made it a one-goal game in the second half, but Bates used decisive runs at the end of the second quarter and again in the fourth to earn a 12-7 win in the NESCAC Tournament Quarterfinals on Saturday afternoon at Pratt Field at Lehrman Stadium.

Amherst (8-7) set the tone in the opening minutes. Willie Doyle struck first at 12:57 with an unassisted finish, and after Bates answered at 12:28, Amherst regained the lead when Bob Gross scored at 7:01 off a feed from Alex Vlacich to make it 2-1 after one. The Mammoths created looks throughout the first quarter and had opportunities to build on the lead, but Bates goalie Andrew Toland turned aside early chances to keep it tight.

The swing came in the second quarter. Bates scored five times in the period, including a man-up goal at 3:56, to turn a one-goal deficit into a 6-3 halftime lead. Amherst's key response was Brendan Reilly's unassisted goal at 7:34, which momentarily steadied the game, but Bates finished the half with enough scoring to create breathing room going into the break.

Amherst made its push coming out of halftime, delivering its best stretch of the day in the third. Max Youssefnia scored unassisted at 14:15, and Sam Schafer added another unassisted goal at 10:42 to cut the margin to 6-5 and put real pressure on Bates. Bates answered at 8:40 to restore a two-goal cushion, taking a 7-5 lead into the fourth.

The Mammoths weren't finished. Amherst again closed the gap to one early in the final period when Oliver Pritchard scored at 13:16 (assist: Andrew Hahm), making the score 7-6. But Bates responded immediately with a man-up goal at 10:12, then used a late run, highlighted by goals at 4:21, 3:13, and 0:44, to pull away. Doyle scored his second of the afternoon at 6:34, but Amherst couldn't get closer in the final minutes.

Doyle finished with two goals to lead Amherst's scoring, while Gross, Reilly, Youssefnia, Schafer, and Pritchard each added one. In goal, Brooks Catlin kept Amherst within reach throughout with 17 saves. Bates was paced by Connor Hartman (four goals) and Riley McClure (three goals).
